Catcher #3

I find it odd how Holden doesn't like most people.  The only people I find he does like are Phoebe and Allie even though he is dead.  I feel he is purposely finding fault for these people because he is searching for something that he has not found yet.  Personally, I feel he is still grieving with the loss of his brother.  For instance, Holden gets annoyed at Sally, doesn't like the Rockettes because they show off too much, doesn't like Ackley, and even asks ignorant questions to Luce.  In addition, I am curious by his fascination with the ducks in central park.  In the previous chapters, he asked the cab driver what happens to the ducks in the winter, and while he was drunk he walked to central park to the pond to try and see the ducks.

Yea you know Margy, to be completely honest, I was wondering the same thing. The reference to the ducks in the pond in Central Park came up several times in the book. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it symbolizes Holden a little. I think Holden is so curious of the ducks because in a way, he wants to run away from his problems just as the ducks do from areas of cold. If Holden was an animal he would definitely be a migrating duck.

Yea, I was wondering the same thing. Why in the world would an individual be fascinated by ducks? Well honestly, I think that the ducks symbolize freedom. They can fly anywhere they want and do so without any challenge. I think Holden, who is surrounded by depression, wants to be freed from his misery.

Well, I feel that the ducks of central park serve as a symbolic purpose in the book. Holden is afraid of change and growing up. Holden feels like he relates to the ducks because every winter they must face change too. However, the fact that change is not permanent is something that makes Holden feel slightly better about his situation.

I was thinking the same thing with the ducks. I guess it shows that when you're drunk you don't know what you're saying. But I think he's an idiot because he didn't even know where they went when he was sober. I mean everyone knows they book a first class ticket to Malibu
